Discussion:
Buit a PC but CPU occassionally 100% used - Why ???

Hi

I built a PC:
P4 2.5 Gig, ECS motherboard
512MB PC 3700 (or 3200?) memory

Occassionally, the CPU is 100% being used - resulting in freezing but it
recovers from it?

I essentially ran the same hard disk and programs on a P3 500Meg w/
128x3 MB ram without this issue? I did fresh install OS, drivers etc.

Only difference is that I upgraded Eudora from 4 to 6.

Pls advice me to fix this issue.

It intended as a Home Theatre PC - but I haven't got there yet.

Thanks,
JK

What is running in the background? Hit cttl-alt-del and press the processes tab.

See what is there. You should start unintalling all the junk from the pc. Also
disable all the fast find and other parts of business applications that keep
running in the background. See how much of your ram is free. When is 100% of the
cpu being used? What are you running? If it is an intensive game, you might want

to upgrade to an Athlon 64 3500+ or Athlon 64 3800+.

Hi JK,

I don't run any games at all.

Are U saying that Athlon 64 3500+ or Athlon 64 3800+ is faster than P4 2.5 ?

Here are the processes that run (it doesn't seem that memory is ever
going to 100% but CPU)- is there any process that you recommend that I
uninstall (Thanks):

Are U saying that Athlon 64 3500+ or Athlon 64 3800+ is faster than P4 2.5 ?
Yes. For some games like Doom 3, the difference is amazing.
http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2149&p=7

For business software the Athlon 64 is also great, but so is a much less
expensive Athlon XP chip.

http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2065&p=6

The $105 Athlon XP 3000+ beats a $250 Pentium 3.2 in Business
Winstone 2004. Switching to an Athlon XP would require a new motherboard,
however that probably would only be around $50.

Be careful of Norton Antivirus and also possibly Works. It they are not
set up properly, the can bogg down your pc. Go through the settings
for these. Also for Windows XP, go to start, settings, control panel,
system, and click on the advanced tab, then in the performance box,
click on settings, then make sure that adjust for best performance is
selected.

Hi
P4 2.5 Gig, ECS motherboard
512MB PC 3700 (or 3200?) memory
Occassionally, the CPU is 100% being used - resulting in freezing but it
recovers from it?
I essentially ran the same hard disk and programs on a P3 500Meg w/
128x3 MB ram without this issue? I did fresh install OS, drivers etc.
Only difference is that I upgraded Eudora from 4 to 6.
Pls advice me to fix this issue.
It intended as a Home Theatre PC - but I haven't got there yet.
Thanks,

Hi JK,
I don't run any games at all.
Are U saying that Athlon 64 3500+ or Athlon 64 3800+ is faster than P4 2.5 ?
Go through the settings
for these. Also for Windows XP, go to start, settings, control panel,
system, and click on the advanced tab, then in the performance box,
click on settings, then make sure that adjust for best performance is
selected.

On the visual effects tab, set adjust for best performance. On the advanced
tab, choose programs. The next step is controversial. I think it helps the pc
run faster. Others may say to avoid it, since if the max is too small, the system
will crash. On the Virtual memory tab, I chose custom, then 384 initial and 768 max.

Here are the processes that run (it doesn't seem that memory is ever
going to 100% but CPU)- is there any process that you recommend that I
uninstall (Thanks):
